Vaxholm - The Capital of Stockholm Archipelago by kayak

Our kayak center is located in the doorway to Stockholm Archipelago. On the one hand there is amazing Bogesund Nature Reserve with outstanding nature and plenty of wildlife. Sheltered water, without vessel traffic is a perfect spot for evening beaver safari. On the other hand you will find lively island Vaxholm, lovely town known as The ‘Capital of Stockholm’s Archipelago’.

Pass by Resarö island with famous Ytterby Mine - the only place in the world with four elements named after it makes the tiny town of Ytterby the periodic table’s most important place in the world. On your way southeast towards Grinda, take a look on Vaxholm Fortress and visit Norrhammen with traditional fishing cottages.

Stora Sandön - the sandy paradise

Stora Sandön located about 15 km away from the kayak center is our favorite spot for the first camp. Long sandy beach is easy to land with kayaks. There is plenty of space for tents. Go for swimming and watch amazing sunset sitting on the beach.

Just a few paddle strokes and you will be on Grinda. Grinda has a popular guest harbour and great accomodation facilities. All in a rural environmental. A signed 3-km nature path leads through all the different types of nature on the island.Despite the fact that the island is quite small, there are plenty of mammals such as fox, roe deer and badger, not to mention the rich bird life.

Gällno, Karklö, Hjälmo

This part of the central archipelago is regarded by many as the most beautiful. Around these lovely islands you will find many pretty huts in traditional swedish red. The older buildings and farms have been remarkably well maintained. Gällno has around 30 permenent inhabitants. A narrow sound separates Gällno from Karklö. The rowing boats boats can be freely used to move between the islands. In summer, these islands are a popular destination, as they lie along the island-hopping routes. On Gällno you will find store and youth hostel, a popular bar with excellent food, and a café with a wide range of delights.

On Hjälmö there is an archipelago farm, Västergården. Animals are transported by ferry in the summer to several of the surrounding islands to keep the landscape open.

Enjoy wooden burn sauna

Träskö-Storö is part of the Hjälmö-Lådna Nature Reserve. It has a protected cove that is a popular natural harbour. Two public saunas are located at Träsköfladen on Träskö-Storö. The island has a rich fauna, being home to badgers, foxes, hares, deer and sometimes even moose. If you are lucky, you may see both white-tailed sea eagles and osprey.

Right next to Träskö-Storö is Stora Kalholmen, where a red building from 1914, became the first hostel in the archipelago.

*You should adjust the route to your kayaking skills, experience as well as sea and weather conditions.
