When should you go kayaking in Stockholm?
The best time for self-guided kayaking and canoe camping in the Stockholm Archipelago is May to September. Choose June and July for long daylight, or late August and September for quieter shores.
With Skärgårdens Outdoor, you can also join guided kayaking tours year-round, with equipment and routes adapted to the conditions.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| May | Rental season begins, fresh greenery, quiet shores and cold water |
| June | Longest days, Midsummer celebrations and plenty of time for island camping, excellent for multi-day trips |
| July | Classic Swedish summer, lively islands, warmer water and more seasonal services open |
| August | Warm summer water, fewer boats from mid-month and more islands to explore as seasonal bird protection restrictions end |
| September | Quiet shores, early autumn colours and cooler evenings. Rentals available until the end of the month |
| October-April | Guided kayaking only, with a drysuit, Swedish fika and optional wood-fired sauna |
Early Summer Kayaking: May
Typical May conditions in the Stockholm Archipelago
| Air temperature | Sea temperature | Daylight |
|---|---|---|
| 10-18°C | 5-10°C | Around 17 hours |
Approximate conditions. Days grow longer throughout May, but the sea remains cold even on sunny days.
May marks the start of kayak and canoe rental season at our waterfront base on Resarö, near Vaxholm. The islands turn green, days grow longer, and the summer crowds have yet to arrive.
It is a lovely time for paddlers looking for a quieter experience. However, the water is still cold, even on sunny days. Plan your route around the weather, your experience and the available daylight. A guided tour is a good option if you would like local support.
Bring layers for changing weather and extra warmth for breaks on shore. For overnight adventures, warmer sleeping bags are available with our camping packages. With the right preparation, May is a beautiful month to explore the islands before the summer rush.

Summer Kayaking: June to the Middle of August
Typical summer conditions in the Stockholm Archipelago
| Air temperature | Sea temperature | Daylight |
|---|---|---|
| Around 15-25°C | Around 12-22°C | Up to 18.5 hours |
Approximate conditions. Water warms through summer, while daylight gradually decreases after June.
Summer is a popular time for multi-day kayaking and canoe camping. Long days leave plenty of time for relaxed paddling, island stops and outdoor dinners. Around Midsummer in late June, you can combine your adventure with Swedish summer celebrations in Vaxholm or on inhabited islands.
From July into August, the archipelago is at its liveliest. Many seasonal cafés, restaurants and island shops are open, making it easier to include a fika or supplies stop along your route. Expect more boats and visitors, although quieter shores can still be found away from the busiest routes.
Book your kayak or canoe rental ahead, especially if you need a complete camping package. Bring sun protection, drinking water and layers for cooler evenings. Prefer a guided adventure? Explore our multi-day guided kayaking trips and enjoy island paddling and camping with a local guide.

Late Summer and Autumn Kayaking: from Mid-August to September
Typical late summer and September conditions in the Stockholm Archipelago
| Air temperature | Sea temperature | Daylight |
|---|---|---|
| Around 12-23°C | Around 12-19°C | Around 13-15.5 hours |
Approximate conditions, generally warmer in August and cooler towards late September.
From mid-August, the archipelago becomes quieter as Swedish summer holidays wind down. The sea retains some summer warmth, boat traffic eases and there is still time for island picnics and outdoor dinners. Swedes call late summer sensommar. For us, it marks the start of our favourite paddling period, our Magic Season.
Seasonal bird protection restrictions also end in many areas, opening up more islands for stops and route planning. In September, expect the first autumn colours, shorter days and reduced opening hours at some island cafés and shops. Carry enough supplies, warm layers and a headlamp for camping.
Our kayak and canoe rentals and self-guided camping packages remain available until the end of September. Choose your route around the forecast and your experience, especially later in the month. Prefer local support? Join a guided kayaking tour and enjoy the changing season with us.
For paddlers looking for quieter waters and fewer people, September can be a wonderful choice.

Cold Season Kayaking: from October to April
What to expect during the colder months in the Stockholm Archipelago
| Air temperature | Sea conditions | Daylight |
|---|---|---|
| Around +10°C to -20°C on the coldest winter days | Cold water, possible ice in winter | Shortest in December, increasing towards spring |
Conditions vary widely between autumn, winter and early spring. Routes are adapted to wind, weather and ice.
Our rental and self-guided season pauses after September, but guided kayaking continues throughout the colder months. October brings autumn colours, while winter can bring snowy shores and floating ice. You do not need to travel to Antarctica for a memorable winter paddle.
Our Winter Kayaking & Fika tour is an approximately three-hour experience for beginners and experienced paddlers. We provide a drysuit, paddling gloves and boots, plus Swedish fika. Bring warm layers to wear underneath, and let your guide choose a route suited to the conditions.
Add a traditional wood-fired sauna afterwards for a relaxing finish by the sea. Optional pick-up and drop-off from Stockholm makes joining us easier. Towards April, longer days bring a feeling of spring, although the water remains cold. Kayaking with us from October to April is guided only.
