Explore the wild side of the Stockholm Archipelago on our 2-day kayak escape. Paddle from island to island, spend a night under the stars, and take a real break from everyday life.
Preparing for Your Adventure
We meet at our seaside kayak base, just about 30 minutes from central Stockholm. Over a Swedish fika (coffee and pastries), you’ll get to know your guide and fellow paddlers. We’ll walk through the plan for the next two days, go over safety and the basics of kayaking in the archipelago. Then it’s time to pack your gear into dry bags, adjust your kayak, and get ready to head out.
Time to Paddle!
With the kayaks loaded and ready, we push off and start weaving our way into the islands. We often aim toward Grinda, but the exact route depends on wind and weather. Along the way, we stop on a small, scenic island to cook and enjoy our first outdoor lunch together – simple, tasty food prepared right by the water.
Camp & Chill
In the afternoon, we choose a peaceful island for our overnight camp. We set up tents, and there’s time for a swim, a short walk, or just relaxing on the rocks. Dinner is cooked together under the open sky – it always tastes better after a day of paddling. As the light fades and the sea quiets down, we settle in by the campfire and ease into archipelago life.
After a relaxed breakfast by the sea, we break camp and load the kayaks again. We paddle deeper among the islands, with the route shaped by the day’s wind and weather. We may pass well-known spots like Grinda or Gällnö, with their mix of wild nature, forests and classic red cottages scattered along the shoreline.
We glide through narrow passages and open bays, stopping on a beautiful island for a swim, a snack, and an outdoor lunch surrounded by nature. Keep your eyes open for white-tailed eagles circling above, ospreys fishing, and maybe a curious seal checking us out from the water.
In the afternoon, we begin our final stretch back toward the kayak base, enjoying the last views of the outer islands as the coastline appears again. Once ashore, we unpack, sort out the gear and take a moment to refresh. If you’d like to round off the trip in true Scandinavian style, you can add a sauna session as an optional extra.
After a short debrief with your guide and fellow paddlers, you’ll be ready to jump on nearby public transport back into Stockholm. We recommend an easy evening in the city – maybe a nice dinner – to balance the wild archipelago with a bit of urban comfort.

A full packing list is sent after booking, and your guide will help you prepare before the trip. At Skärgårdens Kanotcenter, we make it easy to travel light — so you can focus on the adventure, not the gear.
We recommend dressing for the weather — and the water. In summer, it’s best to wear lightweight, quick-drying outdoor clothes. Avoid cotton, as it stays wet and cold; instead, choose technical fabrics or merino wool.
Good choices include:
We also provide paddling jackets to help keep you dry and comfortable while on the water — no need to bring your own.
At Skärgårdens Kanotcenter, we always say: dress for comfort, not just style — the right clothing makes all the difference. After booking, you’ll receive a full packing list to help you prepare.
Absolutely! This multi-day adventure is beginner-friendly, and your guide will give you a thorough introduction to paddling and safety before we set off. You’ll learn everything you need to know along the way, and we’ll take it at a pace that works for the group. While no previous kayaking experience is required, a moderate level of physical fitness will help you enjoy the journey comfortably.
At Skärgårdens Kanotcenter, many of our guests are first-time paddlers — and they often leave with big smiles and great memories.
We mainly use stable, comfortable double kayaks — they’re easy to paddle and perfect for most of our guests, whether you’re a beginner or have some experience.
If you’re paddling solo and have good kayaking skills, you may be assigned a single kayak. In groups with an odd number of participants, we sometimes pair people up to make sure everyone enjoys the trip. Our guide will help arrange the best setup for you.

Your trip will still go ahead — and it can be just as magical. At Skärgårdens Kanotcenter, safety always comes first. Our experienced guides monitor the weather closely and choose the best route each day based on wind and conditions.
A pleasant surprise for many guests: the weather in the Stockholm Archipelago is often better than in the city. Rain clouds tend to stay over the mainland, while the islands enjoy more sun and open skies.
We follow the Swedish saying: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” With the right layers and rain gear, you’ll stay comfortable — even if you get a little wet, which is part of the adventure! Thunderstorms are rare and usually pass quickly, and some of the most memorable paddling days happen under light rain, with stories shared over a warm drink and a tarp.
Hotel pick-up is not included in regular bookings. However, for private group tours, we can arrange pick-up on request — just let us know in advance.
That said, getting to Skärgårdens Kanotcenter is easy and straightforward. Most guests arrive by public transport from Stockholm without any hassle. We’ve detailed the best travel options on this page to help you plan your journey smoothly 🚣✨
Yes — getting to Skärgårdens Kanotcenter is both easy and eco-friendly. Many of our guests are surprised by how smooth the journey is without a car.
From Stockholm, you have two great options:
Option 1:
Take the T14 subway to Danderyds sjukhus, then transfer to bus 670. Get off at Engarn — just a 2-minute walk from our kayak center. SL public transport is modern and climate-conscious — most buses on this route run on biodiesel. A single ticket costs around 43 SEK and can be paid with a contactless card or mobile. (More at sl.se.)
Option 2:
Enjoy the scenic route: take a Waxholmsbolaget ferry from Strömkajen (Stockholm city center) to Vaxholm. The 1-hour cruise takes you through the heart of the archipelago. From Vaxholm, catch bus 670 to Engarn (5 minutes). Ferry tickets cost approx. 100 SEK and are payable onboard by card.
Many guests say the journey feels like part of the adventure — and a perfect introduction to their experience with us.
You can plan your route using Google Maps >>

We encourage disconnecting, but yes — in most parts of the archipelago, you’ll still have mobile coverage. Signal strength varies depending on your provider and location. Don’t expect Wi-Fi, but you might be able to check messages or take that perfect sunset photo for your stories.
