Kayaking safety tips

Kayak safety tips for beginners

Kayaking can be a safe and unforgettable experience—especially when you’re prepared and follow basic safety guidelines.

How to Stay Safe on the Water

  • Always wear a buoyancy aid – It’s included in your rental and must be worn at all times when paddling.

  • Bring your mobile phone – Keep it in a waterproof drybag. Drybags are available for rent at our center.

  • Dress for the weather – Wear appropriate clothing and be prepared for sudden changes in weather.

  • Inform someone about your paddling plan – Always let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to return.

  • Don’t paddle solo – Unless you are an experienced kayaker who knows how to perform a solo re-entry after a capsize, we recommend paddling with a friend or joining a guided tour.

  • Check your kayak’s hatches – All our kayaks are unsinkable, but make sure the hatches are securely closed before heading out.

  • Plan according to your skill level and the weather – If you’re unsure, ask us for advice. All tour plans must be communicated to us before departure.

  • Navigation is key – You must bring a map for navigation (scale 1:50,000 is sufficient), showing fairways, sea marks, and landmarks. A basic map of the local area is included in your rental. More detailed maps are available to rent or buy.

  • Follow local boating rules – All routes are open to other traffic (ferries, motorboats, sailboats), and you’re responsible for following proper marine traffic rules.

  • Consider extra safety equipment – Depending on your route, you may need additional gear like a compass, spare paddle, pump, or extra drybags. A list of available safety gear and prices is available on-site (subject to availability).

Learn the Buddy Rescue (T-Rescue)

Before heading out with friends, we strongly recommend learning the buddy rescue technique, also known as the T-rescue. It’s an essential skill that allows you to quickly and safely help someone back into their kayak after a capsize.

Emergency Assistance

We do not offer a pickup service if you or someone in your group is delayed or unable to return. For emergency pickups, we recommend contacting one of the following local boat taxi services:

Kastellets Rederi: +46 (0)70-225 0005

Waxholm Water Taxi: +46 (0)70-600 61 00
