The Åkers Canal Adventure takes you through one of Sweden’s most historic and scenic waterways. Paddle through the serene inner archipelago, venture into the Åkers Canal, and experience the natural beauty and Viking history that surrounds this ancient trade route. This route offers a perfect balance between peaceful waters and adventurous exploration, ideal for canoe enthusiasts looking for a multi-day journey in the Stockholm Archipelago.
This peaceful reserve is a hidden gem in the inner Stockholm archipelago. Originally two separate islands—Kristenholmen and Gästholmen—land uplift has turned them into a single peninsula. The area offers a surprising variety of landscapes: forested hills, old pine and spruce trees, flower-rich meadows, coastal pastures, and wetlands in excellent condition. Näsudden is also a great spot for birdwatching and seasonal wildflowers, making it a favorite for nature lovers paddling through the archipelago.
The Åkers Canal (Åkers kanal) was once a vital trade route for the Vikings and has remained a historical gem in Sweden. Stretching for about 10.7 kilometers, this canal connects Trälhavet with Garnsviken, part of the ancient Viking route, Långhundraleden. As you paddle through the calm waters of the canal, you’re following the same route that Vikings used centuries ago. The waterway, surrounded by lush green forests and ancient trees, offers an unforgettable experience as you explore the region’s rich history and stunning landscapes. Along the way, you’ll pass a scenic lock, adding to the historic charm of the journey. The canal ultimately leads to the peaceful Garnsviken Lake, a tranquil end to this Viking-inspired adventure.
Historically, Långhundraleden was a key transport route from the sea all the way to Uppsala. Due to land uplift, the route no longer reaches as far north, but today, paddlers can navigate all the way to the end of Lake Garnsviken. This tranquil journey through history and nature offers an extraordinary chance to connect with Sweden’s Viking past.
Unlike open-sea kayaking, canoeing offers a slower pace, keeping you closer to the shoreline for a more intimate connection with nature. This route offers a gentle and immersive archipelago experience—ideal for anyone seeking an accessible yet adventurous journey through landscapes shaped by both nature and history.
