Paddle around Storön island, just outside of Vaxholm, on this immersive 2-day kayaking adventure. With an overnight stay on a secluded island, this trip blends active exploration with the peaceful charm of the Stockholm Archipelago.
Start from our kayak rental and paddle along Vaxholm, passing by Norrhamn, a picturesque north harbor with traditional fishing cottages, and stop for a fika at a cozy café. Take a look at Vaxholm Fortress (Vaxholms Fästning), dating back to the 1500s and built by King Gustav Vasa. Located between Vaxholm and Rindö, it played a crucial role in defending Stockholm.
Pass through Stegesundet, a picturesque strait lined with charming summer villas. Be mindful of ferry traffic in this narrow passage. Continue towards Ekholmen, a favorite island with a sandy beach and picnic-perfect rocks.
Paddle onwards to Tisterön and Storön, where you can explore rocky islets and spot coastal birds like eiders, oystercatchers, and white-tailed eagles. If you’re lucky, you might see a gray seal resting on the shoreline.
Set up camp on Tisterön or Storön and take an evening hike to scenic viewpoints like Stora Skratten, soaking in the tranquility of the archipelago.
Begin your day paddling along Storön before heading to Oxdjupet, a deep, narrow strait between Rindö and Värmdö. Once a key route into Stockholm, it offers stunning views of Oskar Fredriksborg Fortress and passing ferries. The strait has a long history of naval defense, dating back to the 1500s when King Gustav Vasa attempted to block it to protect Stockholm.
Continue paddling along Rindö, where you can take an optional detour to Byviksfortet, a coastal defense fort from the early 1900s. Explore fortifications and learn about its role in Sweden’s military history before returning to your kayak.
Enjoy an optional lunch at Bryggan på Tenö, a cozy restaurant in Bogesund Nature Reserve, before paddling back towards the kayak rental.
