Träskö-Storö

Quick details

Overnight kayak tour to Träskö-Storö with wonderful nature trails and sauna by the sea.

Träskö-Storö is part of the Hjälmö-Lådna Nature Reserve. Once you land with a kayak, you may be greeted by grazing sheep from the farm Västergården on Hjälmö. We recommend also a walk along wonderful nature trail and after all relax in sauna. The Archipelago Foundation is the owner of large parts of the island since 1963. The cottage near the sauna, “Augustssonskans torp”, is named after the woman who lived here up until the 1970s. The south side of Träskö-Storö is privately owned.

The island has a rich fauna, you can meet here among others: badgers, foxes, hares, deer and sometimes even moose. While kayaking you have great chance to see two big predator birds: white-tailed sea eagles and osprey. Right next to Träskö-Storö is Stora Kalholmen, where a red building, built in 1914, became the first hostel in the archipelago. There is a sauna too (which saved our live once while kayaking in late autumn in terrible weather).

Plan your route according to your skills and weather forecast. You are responsible for conducting proper behaviour according to the traffic rules.

Rentals and self-guided trips FAQs

In Sweden we say ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes’. You will be surprised how fun it is to paddle in rain. Make sure you wear the right outdoor clothing (no jeans or cotton).

During thunderstorms or very strong winds we may have to re-schedule or cancel activities for safety reasons.

Unless you are an experienced paddler and know how to do the self-rescue, we recommend you do not paddle alone.

If you do not know how to do solo re-entry after a capsize, we recommend to paddle with a friend or join a guided tour. You can also rent a stand up paddleboard by yourself.

Our kayak center is located about 30 min by car from Stockholm and it is easy to get here with public transport. Take subway T14 towards Mörby Centrum, on station Danderyds sjukhus go to bus terminal F and switch to bus 670. Our nearest bus stop is 100m away and is called Engarn.
