Your Kayaking Journey – Step by Step

On your first day, you’ll arrive at our kayak base, where your journey into the wild begins. We’ll go over the route, introduce you to the Right to Public Access, and make sure you’re fully equipped for your adventure. You’ll get a safety briefing, adjust your kayak, and have time to repack your gear—moving from a suitcase or backpack into your kayak’s waterproof storage compartments.

If you haven’t stocked up on food yet, no worries! You can borrow one of our bikes and ride to the nearest grocery store, just 2.5 km away. One of the best things about sea kayaking is that you don’t have to carry everything on your back, so feel free to bring a few extra comforts—like a book, binoculars, or a hammock. Weight isn’t a problem when you’re gliding through the water!

Before heading into the wilderness, you’ll pass through Vaxholm, where you can enjoy a final moment of civilization. Why not stop at a cozy café for a fika—Sweden’s beloved coffee break—with a fresh cinnamon bun? Then, with your kayak fully loaded and the open sea ahead, it’s time to paddle into the heart of the archipelago.

As the sun starts to dip, find a scenic island to set up your first wild campsite. Take a refreshing swim in the sea, cook a simple meal over your camp stove, and settle in for a breathtaking sunset. With no city lights to compete with, the sky fills with stars—a reminder of just how far from the ordinary you’ve ventured.

The next morning, wake up to the sounds of nature and prepare a hearty breakfast. Our favorite camp breakfasts? Oatmeal with berries or a scrambled egg feast, easily made on your lightweight Trangia stove. Check the latest weather updates, pack up your gear, and continue your journey, letting the wind and waves guide your next destination.

Sea kayaks glide at around 4-5 km per hour, and with the long summer daylight, there’s no rush. Take your time exploring, swimming in hidden bays, and enjoying the simple pleasures of outdoor life. Stop on an island for lunch and a midday swim to cool off. Pick wild berries along the trails, take a short hike for a new perspective, or just do nothing at all—chilling in nature is part of the magic.

As the afternoon fades, find another perfect island to call home for the night. Each day brings new discoveries, new landscapes, and the kind of freedom only the wild can offer.

After a day of paddling, there’s nothing better than unwinding in a traditional Swedish sauna. Many islands in the archipelago have public saunas, and you can kayak from one to another, making it part of your adventure. Feel the heat relax your muscles, then take a refreshing dip in the sea before heading back to camp under the stars.

This is more than just a kayaking trip—it’s a chance to immerse yourself in Sweden’s wild beauty, challenge yourself with an outdoor adventure, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Whether you’re an experienced paddler or a first-time explorer, this self-guided journey lets you experience the archipelago on your own terms, with the confidence of having top-quality equipment and expert guidance before you set out.

At the end of your adventure, return to Vaxholm with stories to tell and a deep appreciation for the natural wonders of the Stockholm Archipelago. We can’t wait to hear your tales and see your photos—let’s sit down with a cup of coffee and a map to relive your journey! And if you book in advance, you can end your trip with a well-earned sauna session. We’ll have it warm and ready, waiting just for you.

Outdoor clothes should be chosen based on the weather forecast. Avoid cotton and opt for quick-drying fabrics or merino wool instead. Quick-dry hiking pants or shorts, a thermal top, and wet shoes or sandals with proper straps (shoes you don’t mind getting wet) are recommended. Make sure to pack a fleece too, just in case it gets chilly later in the day.

In the event of rain or bad weather during your self-guided adventure, it’s essential to prioritize safety while waiting for the weather to clear. Remember to pack appropriate outdoor clothing to stay warm and dry. In Sweden, we believe there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes, so be prepared for any conditions. While thunderstorms are rare and usually pass quickly, it’s a good idea to bring along a book or cards to pass the time.

Absolutely! Our part of the archipelago is beginner-friendly, with calm waters and sheltered conditions. It’s not open sea with strong currents, so you can choose an easy route. We recommend going in groups of at least two for safety, and our canoes and double kayaks are particularly easy to handle, even for first-timers.

Our kayak center is easily accessible and affordable via public transportation, with the bus stop located just 100 meters away. We highly recommend arriving by bus and returning by ferry for a scenic and enjoyable journey.

To reach us, take the T14 subway line towards Mörby Centrum. Upon arrival at Danderyds sjukhus station, transfer to bus 670, which stops at the Engarn station, a short walk from our center. For more detailed information, including schedules and routes, please visit the waxholmsbolaget.se website. Tickets for the subway and bus can be purchased at sl.se.
